Spending Freeze: Day 5

DAY 5:  $198.95 / -3.2 lbs

Happy Easter! I’m always sad when the weekend comes to an end, but today I didn’t really mind as much. We had some trouble getting through spending temptations this weekend and I just think the weekdays might be safer!

EAT

Breakfast:  We did not plan on an Easter type meal in advance, but still attempted to create one today. Since our breakfast was around noon, Canadian bacon seemed an acceptable replacement to the traditional ham!  I even made a brown sugar glaze for it, put it in a tiny baking dish, and warmed it in the oven.  I figured out how to make awesome and easy mashed potatoes with the 3 potatoes that were on their last leg and had jarred gravy in the pantry for them.  The corn was a given and of course I made deviled eggs.

Lunch:  The hubs wanted to eat out bad! (See his attempt at a solution to getting around the freeze below). Luckily it’s Easter so there isn’t a lot open.  But his negotiating skills were in full force and I found myself right there with him.  Papa John’s was open so I checked my rewards points to see if I was up for a free pizza. Nope. So I dug through some purses and found a $10 AmEx gift card (wooohooo!). We agreed this was the best way to use it, especially since they were running a 50% off promo code.  We went to pick it up, the card didn’t work, so now we are negotiating the best way to swap this expense mistake. :-/

Dinner:  I wanted to make the best of the last cucumber in the house and also had Greek yogurt about to expire, so I figured we try to make Chicken Gyros with Tzatziki Sauce.  It was a fantastic dinner and the leftover cucumber got sliced and put in water for a little detox drink for tomorrow!

Gyros ready to wrap up…why am i out of tomatoes already!?

SAVE

My parents surprised us today with Amazon gift cards in our e-mails today!  The hubs tried to buy a Buffalo Wild Wings gift card with it so he could eat out, but BDubs is closed today and Amazon doesn’t allow that anyway.  I’m saving mine for a rainy day. Thanks Ps!

LOVE

The hubs and I are prepping for our tomorrow start of Jillian Michaels’ Body Revolution and other self-improvement things happening so we’ve been pumped up and excited about life all day!

Spending Freeze: Day 4

DAY 4: $198.95 / -0.8 lbs

This is the first Saturday of the Spending Freeze and the first day I’ve had to spend money!  Don’t worry, I didn’t break the rules.  We ran out of eggs so I bought a carton of 18 at Publix.  I checked out the cost per egg price and 18 was the better deal so spent $3.99.  Then, since we are down to the last roll of TP per bathroom (!), it was declared that this was a definite “need” item which I hadn’t really thought about.  I went on my Favado app (thanks, Mom!) and searched for the best toilet paper deals.  Walgreens won out with their store deal matching up to the coupons I had.   I saved $1, but probably more than that just by checking out all of the best deals and not just buying whatever.  While I was doing this, the hubs and our friends are out at his gig having fun and spending their money.  I’ve already been texted to “Come join!” and had to say no.  It totally sucks.  It’s probably tougher for him though…if he’s staying on track!  Fingers crossed!

EAT

Breakfast:  Sausage, Eggs, and Later Tater Tots.  The breakfast sausage needed to be cooked or thrown away tomorrow, so we ate it all and didn’t save any for the freezer as planned.  Oh well!  I didn’t realize we were down to one egg so put a pathetic dab of scrambled eggs on each plate.  (I actually added a splash of milk to stretch the egg a little). Whatev, it worked.  and later we ate the poorly timed mini tater tots.  I hate that those are gone!  Think I can figure out how to make and freeze my own??

Lunch: After posting last night we made Frisco Melts with the ground beef we had defrosted.  I tried to make the “special sauce” and would say it was definitely NOT the same.  But, hey, we didn’t drive to Steak n Shake, (aka saved $12) so they served their purpose.  I saved half and ate that for lunch today.  I made the hubs a green smoothie to go to help prevent him from getting hungry while on the road.

Dinner:  No clue yet since I’m posting early.  Frozen tortellini?  Pasta bake?

SAVE

I think the biggest savings of the day is that I didn’t go to the gig and that we aren’t going out tonight.  I hate to admit it, but that’s a $100 savings, seriously.  No Uber + No Buying Drinks = No Fun Big Savings.  We’ve already speculated that we might be winos by the end of this month because that’s the main source of the alcohol stockpile in the house.  Oops!

LOVE

Frozen grapes ready to bag before they went bad!

I love cooking and doing meal prep.  Like, LOVE love it.  It’s fun and totally rewarding.  I got up early, had 2 cups of coffee and was hyped up enough to prep green smoothies, freeze grapes, make frozen spinach cubes for future smoothies, and make buffalo chicken pinwheels for snacking.  I love catching all of this food before it goes bad and having it ready to go!  Now time for a beer on the patio…where I can hear my neighbors two doors down partying it up…for Easter I guess!?  Cheers!

Spending Freeze: Day 3

DAY 3: $85.95 / -4.2 lbs

EAT

Breakfast:  Same as yesterday…pretty boring.

Lunch:  Spiralized Butternut Squash Fried Rice Leftovers. So good! (Pic on Instagram)

Dinner:  We made homemade pizzas with our usual pizza dough recipe. We easily could’ve ordered delivery (and spent $20) because it’s Friday night and we were so hungry!  But our pizzas were perfect. The hubs used up the pepperoni so I’m not sure what he’ll do for the next pizza night…

SAVE

I downloaded Dave Ramsey’s “The Total Money Makeover” audiobook to listen to on my commute. I thought we owned it, but couldn’t find it. I really wanted to review it for the Spending Freeze, so got it from the library for FREE instead of paying $15.95 on iTunes. It’s really keeping me focused on the challenge and making my drive go by faster!

LOVE

I thought my evening was going to be consumed with cleaning, but the hubs gig got canceled so we’ve been able to spend the whole evening together cooking and binge watching Friends on Netflix. Obviously better than cleaning and I LOVE having unexpected time together!  Happy Friday!

Spending Freeze: Day 2

DAY 2: $50.00 / +0.6 lbs

EAT

Breakfast:  A fresh banana for breakfast to-go since they won’t be around for long and made a deliciously free coffee (or 2!) once I got to work. The coffee machine at work is luxurious and there truly is no reason to run through a Starbucks on my way in.

Lunch:  Heated up a baked potato and spiralized carrot noodle dish (in above pic) I had made earlier in the week.  I really wanted Subway and normally would go, but realized I was just hungry in general and ate what I had of course.  I’m throwing in a $5 savings for that change!

Dinner:

I’m posting early and am not really hungry.  Can wine be my dinner??

I know that there is a gain of 0.6 lbs up there, but I’m not stressing.  Weight fluxuates and I had a lot of salt yesterday.  Well, that’s what I’m telling myself, but hopefully a loss gets going soon!

SAVE

The big savings news of the day is that I lowered the Phone/Cable/Internet bill!  I intended on calling just to see what my options were and to see how much I could save if I canceled cable and phone.  Turns out that we’d be taking a hefty penalty for canceling our contract a year early so that was out.  My customer service person was awesome.  I told her I couldn’t really afford what we were paying and I got a $25/month discount for being a loyal customer.  Then she refreshed our HBO so that we would get the current special of FREE HBO for 12 months saving us another $20/month!  I’m locked in on this deal for the rest of my contract and feel like this was a total win.

LOVE

I’m trying to figure out how to use this category during the freeze and I’m thinking that I just commit to doing something for myself daily that makes me happy…and distracts me from spending money.  Today I came home and poured myself a glass of wine (from an already opened bottle in the fridge), sat on the patio, enjoyed the weather and just…relaxed.  It felt great.  Cheers!

30 Day Spending Freeze

Today is the start of a 30 Day Spending Freeze!  The hubs and I decided we needed to reevaluate our spending habits and bank accounts and then SAVE MONEY!  We’ve done the freeze before and the results are totally worth it.

THE RULES:

1.  No spending any money for 30 days with the exception of: bills, real emergencies, and absolute necessities (we have also agreed to buy eggs and milk if we run out)

2.  …that’s pretty much it!

THE GOALS:

1.  Set up a monthly budget

2.  Save $1000+

3.  Clean out the food storage by planning meals and eating only what is on hand

4.  Clean out household items by using what is on hand or by selling stuff

5.  Lose weight in the process by distracting ourselves with Jillian Michaels Body Revolution Program and by tracking our calories on the LoseIt app

6.  Have Fun!

DAY 1: $0.00 / 0.0 lbs START

I actually woke up excited about the whole thing!  The hubs texted me after I got to work letting me know that he already failed and had McDonald’s for breakfast.  I was devastated.  I felt shocked and alone…until he texted “April Fools!”  Grrrr!!!  But, shwew!  So it’s the end of Day 1 and we’ve set the budget using EveryDollar.com, ate all meals/snacks from what we had on hand (we whipped up Egg Drop Soup & Mongolian Beef for dinner!), read up on our workout plan, and successfully went the whole day without spending a penny.  Now time for bed before I can think of something I want to buy online.  Goodnight!
